To eat we're having submarine rolls with lettuce, haddock goujons and fresh tartare sauce, with chunky chips and white chocolate cheesecake with ice cream for afters.

We have some Viognier and Prosecco for MIL and me and beer and whisky for the men and a bottle of Monopole Rosé for midnight.

What are you eating and drinking on the last evening of the year?

NYE, Piggy. Is it tapas and Sangría this evening or something else?

Is that a whisky, TTT? My brain is conjuring up images of a brown hexagonal bottle or am I thinking of something else?

Margo, when you told me about your menu earlier it inspired me to organise a curry evening with some family and friends for February.
Bottle of champagne, followed by fillet steak home made chips, onion rings and peas.

Dave, I had better not relay that to the captive or we'll be having a Stewards Enquiry as to why we're not having that! Sounds lovely. I would probably add in a pepper sauce.
Little Tigs came back last night and his dad stayed the night and is still here. We're getting takeaway (not sure what) later before he leaves to go to a NYE party in Essex where he lives. Me and son are staying in and watching tv.

I haven't been out for new years in years so no change for me. Hope you and all ABers have an enjoyable NYE :o) xx
Advocaat for me tonight.Ive taken a liking for the stuff.Tomorrow whisky shandies all the way.
There's four of us going out to a local Indian restaurant and I am really, really, really looking forward to it. We'll be back home for midnight and we have Aldi's finest Bucks Fizz to welcome in the New Year!
LCG, I belive the Wannabe Cockaneeeee Barra Boy is refering to the fictional detective, Sexton Blake which is rhyming slang for fake, cake or steak.

Same here, Tiggs. I'm more of a homebody these days - unless I'm stopping over with family. I hope you have a lovely evening.

What's a whisky shandy, Ynnafymmi?

We're having paella and white wine tomorrow and dry Jan begins on 02 January.
I will be sorting a couple of bowls of Halibut Albert with a few chunky skin on fries for a side. Apple Strudel and custard to follow. Sipping a mellow Macallan tot right now. Plenty of Sherry in and wine aplenty.
Chicken stir fry, mince pies and maybe cheese and biscuits.

Thanks, TCL. I confess to never having heard of that. I'm pretty sure there is a Sexton Whisky though - I'm damn sure I bought OH a bottle once.

That sounds jolly spiffing, fitdarren.
Yes, there is a Sexton Whiskey.
Question Author
Hi Togo, dare I ask what Halibut Albert is?

That sounds very nice, Tilly. I do wish we had cheese and biscuits tonight instead of cheesecake but FIL just wouldn't want to know.

Thanks, TCL. I'm led to believe there is a difference between Whisky and Whiskey? I only know if I like the taste or not.

Yeah, one's spelt with an 'e', t'other isn't :-))
Just the normal for me. Home made pasties with 3 of the cheapest vegetables you can buy. Carrots, swede and onion, I might add a few bits of bacon bits in also. Pre-boil the 3 veg and mash.
Ready made puff pastry from Aldi. The puff pastry is only a £1 a roll.
Cheap meal, very cheap. :0)
Halibut Fillet( preferably with the skin on if it is not too thick. Sweat up chopped onion in olive oil(not caramalised) As the onions are slowly softening add salt and ground black pepper. Using a good rapeseed oil sear the salted Halibut steaks/fillets( skin side down if it has the skin on) in a pan with a table spoon of hot rapeseed oil until the skin is browning or the fish is slightly browning on the one side. Remove the fish from the heated oil and set aside. It should not be cooked through. Then add tomatoes to the softened chopped onion. You can add chopped mushroom, courgette, or aubergine to the softened onions as well but not to much of either of them. The tomatoes must be a good tin( I use tin Cirio plum tomatoes when local plum or cherry tomatoes are not available) or skinned and cored cherry or plum tomatoes. Add to the onions and then crushed garlic( must be crushed through a proper garlic press) and a couple of tablespoons of grated Lancashire cheese or similar. I am using M&S Dewlay Lancashire which is great for cheese sauces and cooking in general. Warm the tomatoe, onion, cheese mixture through until the cheese melts in. Add this to deep bowls and place the Halibut on top browned side up. This goes into a hot oven and after 10 minutes or so when the halibut is just about cooked through cover the sides of the Halibut over the top of the tomato mixture with more of the grated Lancashire cheese and back in the oven until the cheese is bubbling. Do not put the cheese over the Halibut and if the Halibut had skin you can further crisp it with a chefs blow torch. Tonight I am even adding a few king prawns to the tomato mixture when it goes in the oven. Red or White wine is good with this dish.
Nothing too posh for me I haven't thought that far ahead, having just watched the footy (no spoilers) I'm dragging stuff out of the freezer... I do have plenty of fresh veg and meats so could come up with something.
