Little cakes made with almond paste and sponge. My mother used to bake them. Any ideas?

Actually I did used to eat macaroons, but not the pastel rainbow flying saucers I see in the bakery.
They were almost flat almond shaped chocolates sold by the ounce with gritty bits. Possibly almond flavoured. They looked sort of dusty.
