My Father has banned me from buying him an Xmas present as I am on sickness benefit, however I am going for dinner there on Boxing day. Both my father & step mum love red wine, (I'm a white wine person myself) & I would love to take them a lovely bottle of Red wine. I can stretch to about 10 & I shop in Sainsbury - any ideas what to get them, I know they usually only spend about 3 per bottle, so I guess anything will be an inprovement on that. I personally love Chilean wines, so maybe this would be a good choice? Help please from any Red wine buffs out there!

I love Barola but it can be expensive. A good Rioja can be had for under a tenner.
Meant Barolo, sorry.

For a really nice present especially if they wouldn't perhaps look at it normally I'd suggest a bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape.

Should be in budget and is a full bodied red wine that has a good reputation.

There is a 'similar' wine (red cote du Rhone) called Chasse du Pape, but is sold at a cheaper price 'cos its from the lesser vineyards. Still tatse good though and you may find you can get 2 of these for the price of 1 bottle of Chateuatneuf.

..quite a few supermarkets have a 3 for 10 offer at the mo, I know co/op and spar do, then you could get 2 red and a white for yourself...
Go for a good Australian red from Rosemount or Penfolds, or perhaps Wollf Blass from South Africa. None of them will disappoint.
My alltime fave red wine is Fleurie. About 7 - 8 at the supermarket.

Yellow Tail Shiraz is mega tasty !!

If you have time scout round local supermarkets. Most will have offers on at this time of year, eg Somerfield are doing a Rioja at half price, so you can get a 9 wine for 4.50. This way you can try a decent wine at an affordable price (some of course may say what's decent about Rioja!) Flyers delivered with local freebie newspapers usually highlight the best offers.
