Cinnamon would also be nice. Though weaning yourself off the sweet taste would be the best thing to do. Easier said than done I know.

Ellie, I probably wouldn't like ginger as I even ginger biscuits burn my mouth out. :-)

Apologies to APG for not reading your post properly.
You said, 'I use this,' and then I asked if you use it! :-)

Pasta, I've noticed you can buy porridge with things added, but it sends the calories up and I'm hoping to lose some more weight, so I'm trying to make it as low in calories as I can although I don't see why cinnamon would have calories.
I'll check it out.
I use cinnamon on my porridge, natures sweetener, it is lovely with maybe a stewed apple mixed in, I think cinnamon is a brilliant substitute to get you off the sugar
I`ve never found a sugar substitute that doesn't taste nasty. I`ve tried Stevia (in liquid and powder form), sucralose, and just about every other one. There are only about 16 calories in a teaspoon of sugar so I wouldn`t worry about it. Just limit the amount of sugar.

Barry @13.41.
I don't like it made with water, but I have compromised and I buy skimmed milk now which I have got used to in tea and coffee also.
Still putting squirty cream on my hot chocolate though.
I'm working on that. :-)
It's not artificial but why not try honey.
If you’re only using sugar on your porridge then personally I’d continue using sugar..unless you’re heaping loads on!
Barsel, I too used to hate porridge without sugar. Couldn't eat any cereal without heaps of sugar but as I said I decided the sugar had to stop.
I didn't like the porridge on day 1, nor day 2. Day 3 it wasn't so bad, day 4 I enjoyed it. Porridge doesn't have a strong horrible flavour so I was able to finish it.
Same as when I cut the three spoons of sugar from my tea and coffee. First, it was horrible then I enjoyed it. Now sugared drinks taste like hot sugar water to me. Vile.

Have another go at plain porridge.

Dusksie, do you just use ground cinnamon and if yes, how much would you put on a bowl of porridge?
danny, honey has more calories than sugar although it is healthier in other ways - not ideal when you are trying to lose weight
You`ll probably find there is more sugar in your hot chocolate powder than you put on your porridge

237SJ really? Oh my goodness, I never checked that!
Why do we have to give up all the nice things if we want to lose weight?
It's not fair.

Just taken Cadburys Highlights and squirty cream off my shopping list!
Hi Barsel, I sprinkle in ground cinnamon as it is cooking, as much as you would of salt say, to season a savoury meal, or sometimes I stew my apples and store in mason jars and they are seasoned with the cinnamon, whatever way I do it, that's the sweetener I use
I`ve just looked at my pot of Green and Black hot chocolate. There is 23g of sugar per cup so about 1.5 tsp full
Barsel there are only 16 calories in one teaspoon of white sugar, only 12 calories in brown sugar. Its hardly going to impact on your recommended daily intake of calories,
Cadbury's is higher in calories, I substitute that with Options under 40cal drink if I fancied it and you know what is lovely in porridge, a little bit of sugar free jam ( I know the sugar frees as I am diabetic so have tried what is the tastiest and works best for me)
I substitute cream with 0% fat natural yogurt or greek yogurt, love the greek one on stewed fruit

Thanks Ducksie, that sounds nice.
Already have apples in so will add ground cinnamon to my shopping list.
I suppose thinking about it, there is fruit sugar in an apple and as I already eat 1 a day, I could add it to my porridge instead, with the cinnamon.
