I see that the ONS shopping basket by which inflation figures are arrived at now includes chilled mashed potato! Are there really people out there who buy it????

Nice thinking mcfluff - I fancy that myself - but it's macaroni cheese this evening. Cheese and onion pasties take some beating..mmmm.
OP I certainly don't buy chilled mash or anything else now included on the list.

Buenchico - next time I'm in Suffolk I'll look out for you wearing leggings and wearing a badge saying "I've given up pork pies"!
Well you learn something everyday, I didn't even know you could buy chilled mash potato.
.. me either Prudie. now we know ;-) apparently quite popular as well.
M&S chilled mash as part of a Dine In Meal is fine for a lazy, quick meal......and you can add bits and bobs as the mood takes you... :-)
So it seems, I can see it's advantages (if it tastes OK)
I'm only armed with a potato masher and peeler and a nob of butter... no wonder it's hiding probably wants to be a M&S potato.
" So it seems, I can see it's advantages (if it tastes OK)"
Therein lies the problem, not only does it not taste OK, it doesn't even taste like potato. You can't beat a Maris Piper or King Edward for a good mash, add milk, butter and a sprinkle or two of nutmeg for a perfect mash.
I buy it sometimes .I have arthritis in my hands and find peeling and chopping difficult at times .I add a bit of butter and cream and a dollop of horseradish or some cheese, and that's more often than not ready grated.Just enough for two of us and no waste.I know it's dear way of buying spuds but I can't stand over a cooker for long these days.
Vulcan, some of the budget ones may not taste so good but the better ranges have named potatoes, butter and seasoning.

Useless for a family, but when you are restricted it can be helpful.
Indeed it can, Mamya....we experimented a lot when mother-in-law's hands became so crippled and bent with arthritis and even she didn't moan...... :-)
Mrs av buys it sometimes ( I never eat mashed potato ).
You're an oddball.
LOL, your not the first to say that Mamya ;-)
Bless Mrs AV... you haven't lived mate.
Mash and gravy, Tony....try it...you'll love it..... ;-)
These sorts of things are a godsend if you have restricted mobility.I
also buy other fresh veg that's already been prepared and those tubs of fresh fruit that's already been cut up to eat.It just makes my life a bit easier.
