I see that the ONS shopping basket by which inflation figures are arrived at now includes chilled mashed potato! Are there really people out there who buy it????

Really cool people?
People who only have a microwave to cook with.
Oi!

You've nicked my post! I was going to ask exactly the same question myself!

Anyway, it seems that to be one of the 'with it' people I need to stop buying pork pies and start wearing leggings ;-)

Maybe there are folk who can no longer mash their own spuds?
That sounds a bit rude, Alba. :-)
I buy it when I'm feeling lazy. I can never get my mash as smooth.
lol, Douglas, I really must read more closely before I press submit :-))
I've never made mashed potato (using spuds in their natural form) in my life. That's largely because I'm not keen on it with most things.

However I occasionally use the packet stuff, which I like because it's easy to get exactly the right consistency that I favour by adding the right amounts of milk, butter, cheese, mustard or whatever. (If it's looking a little runny, all that's needed is to add a bit more powder).
Have a friend who buys frozen potatoes. They come shaped like a potato croquette and just need defrosted and heated in the micro. She says it saves time and money as she lives on here own.

I'm sure I've had chilled mash as part of a meal deal in the past, always have a bag of frozen mash in the freezer - quick and easy for a single portion.
I have occasionally, it is quick and easy without lumps.

Yes, well there must be a demand for it or they wouldnt sell it
I have done on occasions when he who must be obeyed fancies mash and leaves it to the last minute to tell me.
As I rarely eat it I find it easier to do it - not al the time just sometimes.
We use it all the time.
It's so easy to make the right amount for one of us.....or both of us.
It saves peeling, boiling and mashing; 4 minutes in a microwave and voila!
occasionally, i find it a bit too gluey but when i want to cobble a quick meal together its good for that
now i'm thinking about cheese and potato pie....
I wouldnt buy chilled mashed potato because I dont really like mash (unless its got horseradish or mustard in). But if I liked mash, I would. Some days I dont get in until 8 or 9 and I just cant be bothered to do anything other than prick and ping.
