I'd never heard of it before tonight. Does it taste different to white garlic, and if so where can I buy some?

More to the point, is it still effective in keeping Vampires and the Left at bay?
New to me too!
Looks nasty on the Website.Another way to charge double for the humble Garlic Bulb .
It is Garlics that has been heated over a time, said to have a sweet molasses type taste.

I believe it was very popular in the 1300s and was said to have powers enabling Witchfinders to see into the future.

Oh, so it's just garlic that's been 'tampered' with. Thanks. My husband (an enthusiastic and very good cook) said he read an article about it.
There is also a 'Black Garlic' plant but it's not used in culinary ways.

Mamyalynne, the stuff he's talking about is definitely used in cooking.

Thanks Woofgang.
'Heated for several weeks until the cloves are black' well it sure is going to be expensive !!!!
If I were heated for several weeks I think I'd be a bit black as well.
Doesn't look bad price wise for a treat (if a treat is what it proves to be).
not outrageously expensive Eddie
I was looking at that a few weeks ago...but decided to stick with my obsession with pickled garlic...much cheaper!
A lot of money for what is basically a small piece of caramelized onion.
Garlic is a member of the onion family and I can't see there being much difference after several weeks heating !
Only one way to find out.
Probably just a fad to separate gullible food connoisseurs from their over-amply filled wallets.
Incidentally, for years I was plagued with colds which later developed into chest infections. Then I read an article which stated that chewing half a clove of raw garlic per day could keep these at bay. I'm not one for old wives' tales but decided to try it. The last time I had a cold was in 2004.
Mysupermarket.co.uk (which is usually very reliable) is showing it as available in just one major supermarket: Sainsbury's. Look for this packaging:

Price = £1.50.
The Garlic Farm on the Isle of White (I can recommend a visit if you're ever out that way) sell Black Garlic (heat aged according to them).

They also sell black garlic beer ....

and black garlic vodka.

Now we're talking.
