...it suddenly struck me that I have not seen any bars of toffee around for years and years. Can you still get them?

I also remember cinder toffee.
Pretty sure it was McCowan's toffee. Don't think they exist any longer.
Just googled slab toffee with hammer and lots appeared mostly manufactured by Walkers, didn't see any banana though.

The banana toffee wasn't slab, just small bars.
I loved the banana flavour. I think the last time I saw slab toffee was in our local garden centre.
Probably been banned by the EU
