Having enjoyed a breakfast of shakshuka a few times in Israel I brought back some spices from the Tel Aviv market which said they were 'shakshuka.'

Now I've got them home and unpacked them for storing, the spice mix seems to be bereft of the aroma of cumin which so marked the cooked dish. Does anyone know is there a difference between the popular dish and the spice mix I bought?

Ground spices have a relatively short shelf life, perhaps what you bought was stale.

It really isn't difficult to buy the various spices to make your own spice mix.

Agreed but I was aiming for the genuine local flavour! As a rule proper local markets have a good turnover as well.
