Or anyone else familiar with china/porcelain markings. Would you have any information on this mark. I THINK it's pre-war. http://i62.tinypic.com/xkw0tg.jpg

Here is one of the items that has the marking. http://i60.tinypic.com/k3smip.jpg
1940-1950s Japanese export ware.......
Question Author
DTC, wouldn't Japanese items made in the '40s (late) and early '50s be marked "Made in Occupied Japan"?
Blimey, that's a tough one to find - have been all over ebay and gotheborg.com and google images and can't spot a thing on the marking.
Found a few very similar Kutani sugar bowls with chrysanthemum lids on both ebay and google, but none with the same marking I'm afraid - Hope you find out what it means eventually Stuey.

Interesting looking into these things, isn't it, Peaspeculiars. They are very attractive pieces, and the plates I have are so thin that if you hold one up to a window you can see the outline of your fingers behind it.
Yep, hunting round the internet for clues - like a modern day treasure hunt
:-) Only trouble is, I never really needed a sugar bowl before, now I want one!

My father was in the RN during WWII, and I think, but I'm not sure, that he picked them up somewhere in the Med.. He was never in the Far East though.
Could be just pre-war, stuey, though it could be pre 45 and post 52, my leaning to the 1950 period, being export. Is there any sign of a number reference that would tip it to being earlier....?
Peas - you are sweet enough already, Honey!
Question Author
Here is a picture of a plate http://i62.tinypic.com/i5q3id.jpg There are no numbers on the pieces, DTC.
I think DT could be on to something with the Japanese thing.
aww, shucks DT x
Question Author
Talbot, we know it's Japanese; however, we're trying to sort of date the items by the mark and maybe the design...There's not much information to go on though.
it has shades of Imari to it, just going through my reference sites...and the washing up to do!
Question Author
Forget the washing: this is more important:) What is Imari?
The triangle design at the top of the plate is making me think art deco period... perhaps...
Question Author
I think that "art deco" was a Western notion. I wouldn't think that the Japanese would be "into" it. If my father did in fact pick them up, they would have to be pre 1943 as he was discharged with injuries in that year.
right my thinking now, the main symbol in the centre is very close to the Nikko mark. Their use of Japan used the Nippon to the late 30s - I think you may have a piece dating to the late 30s or coming out of occupation.....looking for their designs. It's that spider web that had me thinking Imari, very alike.....
brilliant peas.... now lets see if that is Nikko...
