Can of tomatoes, onion chopped up, garlic if you like it and salt and pepper. Cook until reduced down to the consistency that you want. For extreme simplicity get a tin of tomatoes that has onion, herbs or garlic already in! 39p from Tesco.

You can use this sauce thick for Pizza or runny for pasta or with mince for bolognese.

I agree with Cheeky.  But I add olive oil as well.  I like fishy pizzas with prawns and squid.  When I do these I usually add some tinned sardines, and use the oil from the sardine tin in the tomato topping.
ok this isn't form scratch but those dolmio stir in small cartons are a nice alternative to tomato puree, especially the sweet pepper one.

instead of using a can of tomatoes I suggest using a tomato sauce called 'passata'  it's basically just tomatoes blended up with no lumps but it's dead cheap and you can get it in almost every supermarket as an own brand.

I use that with pesto, olive oil, garlic and a squirt of sundried tomato puree and reduce it down so it's quite thick.

I haven't tried this myself but a takeaway place near me uses creme fraiche for those who cannot eat tomatoes.
Tomato puree is concentrated tomato sauce. Don'y use it on its own but as an ingredient in any tomato sauce.

To Cheekyteddy's recipe don't forget you can add a dash of worcester sauce or a pinch of chilli powder (both optional but Oregano is essential)
