Does anyone remember the cheese and egg flan from school dinners?

Obviously we didn't all go to the same school, but i was a lover of school dinners in primary and secondary schools and one thing i used to love was the cheese and egg flan.
Does anyone have an authentic recipe for this and is it better to by a premade flan base then make one? I tried to make one the other night using crushed outs as the base and eggs, grated cheese as the topping but the egg mixture got a bit burnt and the oats wasn't a good swap for the original flan mix as the eggs didn't stick to the oats and separated leaving powdered oats still in the flan dish.
Beers to anyone that can help or point me in the right direction, even just to reminisce about the lovely school dinners which i heard aren't nice anymore.

No. but I do remember liver and onions when I was teaching and supposed to encourage a table of junior school children to eat up.
You need an uncooked pastry case, then I fry some onion and put this first, then grated cheese,then beat your eggs with a bit of milk and pour on top.

They had spam fritters as well daisy noona, i also loved the apricot tart, the syrup cornflake cake and think that's all i can remember at the mo.

Is it that simple treetops? I suppose it's trial and error until you get the perfect taste that you remember. I'll try and get this one right before i delve into variations using blue cheese, minced lamb etc..

No daisy but i just remembered we used to have normal custard with most cakes, and then we'd have chocolate custard with chocolate sponge and then we'd have pink custard i think with the sponge cake with jam on top and sprinkles of coconut on it. I think we also had the pink custard with jelly but can't be sure.
Would have avoided anything with coconut. I.E. Wrapped it in my hankie and put it in my Blazer pocket.
I never had school dinners, but once had to go to the dining hall, it smelt vile in there, spring cabbage complete with flies. I would never have been able to eat there. For the cheese and egg flan you would need a pastry base in a sandwich tin baked blind, two eggs beaten with milk (about half a pint altogether) season with salt and pepper, sprinkle 2 oz of grated cheese or more if you wish, on the bottom of the pastry base, I sometimes add some cubed peices of ham, then pour on the egg mixture, you could thinly slice some tomato and lay on top of the egg mixture to give it colour. Put in oven Electric 180 Gas Mk 5-6 Bake for about 30mins or until egg is risen and browned. You'd have to bake the pastry case blind before adding the ingredlents. If you want cheese and onion lightly fry and drain the onion first before putting it in the flan,
On alternate Mondays we had thick pea soup and scotch broth. I hated the scotch broth but loved the thick pea soup which inevitably had a skin on top as it cooled. Scrumptious. Always hoped for a second helping.
Frog spawn (tapioca), semolina, spotted dick, cabbage that had been cooked for hours, liver...and no choice !

ooh, cheese pie was my favourite, I liked school dinners apart from the stew, that was awful...and my mum made the best stew and dumplings in the world, no one could have topped that.
A slightly different recipe for the cheese flan here, without onion

150g strong cheddar cheese grated
1 egg
150ml milk
Pepper
½ tsp mustard powder
Short crust pastry
Preheat the oven to 200C

How to….
1. Line a small flan ring with pastry and blind bake for 10 minutes
2. Turn the oven down to 180c
3. Mix together the egg, milk, pepper and mustard powder. Stir in the grated cheese. Pour this into the cooled pie case. Make sure the cheese is evenly distributed.
4. Grate a little more cheese over the pie.
5. Bake for 20 minutes.
Beerworshipper - we had the pink custard with various things as well. I loved it until someone started circulating a rumour that it was that colour because one of the dinner ladies had cut her finger and dripped the blood into ordinary custard.

Loved most of our school dinners except for liver, which was always grey inside with tubes running through it. Shudder.
My Ma wasn`t the greatest cook so I enjoyed most of the school dinners. Missed them when I left until I met and married the son of the school cook. I got the recipe book when we divorced.
