Alternative to buttercream to fill a birthday cake

Hi - does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can use to fill a 4 layer chocolate cake instead of buttercream? Its for a 3 year old so I feel buttercream may be too heavy. I have got a ganache recipe but I am worried that may also be too sweet? I am looking for something fluffier than buttercream. Any help welcome (as usual!)- thanks

Personally for me buttercream is the ultimate yum but anyway you could try the ready made Betty Crocker frostings, they're very good quality IMO. Or confectioner's custard (think it's vanilla custard whipped with cream)
Ganache is gorgeous but probably far too rich for a littl'un. Squirty cream might be fun and you could involve the child in the squirting - s/he would love it! But it does need to be done just before serving, otherwise you end up with a soggy mess.
I doubt this is the right answer but...... the cake is for a 3yr old....surely as long as it is cake they won't be too fussy. Going for majority preference makes the most sense to me. I'd go for plain whipped cream but it might not support your multi-level cake.
I agree that you need something that will support 4 layers. Maybe a cream cheese frosting?
But really-almost anything you use will be quite sweet...and they only need to have a tiny portion. I'd stick with buttercream.
Apparently, you can make really light buttercream if you make it the day before you want to use it and you beat the butter until it is nearly white before you add the other stuff.
Another vote for marshmallow whip, but check the ingredients - some of the American stuff has allsorts in! You could colour some layers with vegetable food colourings, for fun.

How about creem cheese?
A tin of creme du leche would go nicely as a layer with some thinly sliced banana. It is (if you don't know) condensed milk boiled in the tin, [covered in boiling water] for about three hours. It keeps for ages and is great when making banoffee pie. The ready made creme du leche is a little softer and easier to spread on a sponge layer
Chantilly cream and fresh raspberries or orange segments. Both go really well with chocolate and not too heavy for the wee ones :)

Thanks all - I've never heard of Marshmallow Whip so I may give that a try. I bought some Cremebrill from Ebay & thats a huge success - I folded some in to choc ganache and it was scrummy!! Too goog for a 3yo, so I'll save that for the adults! Cheers
Not fluffy, but Nutella always goes down well in kids' cakes. As long as nobody eating it has a nut allergy, of course!
