Eating red meat can greatly increase chances of heart disease or cancer at an early age. I hoping Im going to be ok then as I havnt eaten red meat for about 30 years ! My OH and son do occassionally. I know that if we listened to everything they say, we would hardly eat anything at all, but I just dont like the taste

Do any Abers eat lots of red meat and cannot do without it.

Hopefully we wont start another animal welfare debate like yesterdays !

This isn't new information.

No, I don't eat much red meat. I'd be happy not to eat meat at all.
And it's processed meat that's worse.
No I don't eat a huge amount of red meat but possibly once every week or so. I do however know an old fella whose 69, eats red meat practiclaly every day and also smokes 80 a day and doesn't look as though he's going anywhere nasty in a hurry. Whilst I agree all sorts of things increase your risk of dying, there is also the school of thought that who wants to live forever on a lettuce leaf, jogging most of the day.
Why don't they ever give proper statistics with these reports, I mean is it one in ten increased to two in ten or one in a million increased to two in a million?
The report comes from the US of A.

We don't eat a lot of red meat, I prefer chicken or fish.
I saw a programmer once about a man who did liven a lettuce leaf "so to speak" He was very thin could not longer exercise because of brittle bones. All in moderation is my opinion.
It's an American study done with American meat-which is not fed the same as meat here in the UK. Their meat tends to be corn fed whereas here in the UK most beef and lamb is grass-fed...it will make a difference in the meat quality.
Also-the study was observational-so cannot really be used to determine cause and effect.
The main culprit seems to be processed meats (sausages, bacon, kebabs, mystery meat pies etc.).
I'm colour blind so I guess I'll be ok either way.
I like red meat and eat a reasonable amount of it. But not always: for example it was pointed out to me I'd had a vegetarian day yesterday, but I'd not planned to, it just happened. (Too much toast, the truth be known.)

The thing that there is risk in almost everything we do in life. This just emphasises a greater risk of dying from cancer or heart disease than of something else a bit later. I've not seen the figures but does the 'greatly increase' claim mean a change from 'unlikely' to 'quite unlikely' ?

Always good to know the facts but it isn't going to rule my life. I don't want to live it manipulated by fear. I want to enjoy what I can for an improved life experience.
a joint of beef.....heaven

Well life expectancy has increased.
We eat more fish than meat, but I love beef, especially rib of beef and like steak occasionally. We never eat lamb, pork or sausages any more and don't miss them. Ham is now a rare treat as is bacon.

Also eat more chicken then we ever did. I don't like roast chicken, but like it in various sauces, etc.

Changed our eating habits a lot in the last three years, since Mr LL had a heart attack (he loved his red meat)

However, our neighbour had a heart attack last year and she hasn't eaten meat of any sort for 50 years.

I think personally we should eat a balanced diet of everything in moderation. Am wary though of processed meats and shop bought pies etc. And I don't eat pastry anymore - I can't think of any nutrition benefits in pastry and don't like it anyway.
Reports like this do worry me and make me wonder if I should stop eating as much processed meat as I do i.e bacon, sausage etc but I do also eat beef, pork and lamb.
The problem is, I could start eating more chicken and fish, then a report would come out about the dangers of those so you can't win.
I was thinking along the same lines as redhelen but when you think about it, our ancestors did eat a lot of meat but they didn't live to be that old usually!
I saw an item on Countryfile about veal.I vaguely remember my parents buying it. Iwould love to try it again. http://www.rose-veal.co.uk/
I'm the same Lottie. I eat very little processed foods. Never have either.
I completely ignore reports like this. They change almost daily.

I just eat and drink what I like. Something's going to kill me at some point so I'd rather enjoy the things I like while I've got the chance.
