What's the name of the random orange (cherry tomato sized) little fruit with really dry, thin browny leaves attached that I always seem to get plonked on top of desserts?!

physalis - they're delicious!
also known as cape gooseberry or chinese lantern

Why is it random? You mean you might get oneon your dessert, whilst the person sitting next to you does not?

Thanks everyone!! Been bugging me for ages!!! It's random because I always seem to get them on my dessert and other people don't!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Or, if you have had a few drinks, you might call them syphalis (oops!).
We always knew them as chinese gooseberrys
Surely Chinese gooseberry is what is now called Kiwifruit. I think it's Physalis or chinese lanterns, very intense burst of tatse for such an unassuming fruit, lovely.
