I love doing my kids' parties! Over the years we have had loads of themed parties-Teddy bears picnic(my daughters first) Magic party( hired magician & kids made animal balloons), Pirates and princesses, which was a great success(Knights and princesses is good too). Kids dress up as (obviously)pirates or princesses and the games were musical islands(drawn on A2 size paper)Race to the hidden castle(kind of assault course) and a treasure hunt. We did the invitations on the computer on A4 sheets, stained them with cold tea, singed the edges and rolled them up with red ribbon. we made a treasure chest pinata which went down really well. We have also had a Superheroes and Villians party(my son's 7th) and on my daughter's last birthday(11th) we had a Hawaiin cocktail party with fruit juice cocktails, hawaiin dancing and made lei (flower garlands)from tissue paper. We have had a girl's only pink party, Football party, and a 70's disco! Hope this helps a wee bit and have fun!

thank you sophie b!--its a great start!
you do not necessarily have to make the theme so nutral. You can do whatever the child likes and wants then improvise for the girls. If the boy like superman then you can do a superman theme and do something for the girls within the theme. Like having some kind of cheap version of superman and louis laine costumes. If you know how many girls there are going to be then buy just some little accessories that are girly and tell them that they are dressing up like louis laine and find something like a cape with a big S on it that you probably could make for the boys. If you do not have the time to be elaborite or don't have the resourses then all you have to do is make party bags boyish for boys and party bags girly for girls. Let you kid have the theme he wants. and involve him in the planning and accessorizing. Good luck I hope you have a great party.
