no they tell you at your doorstep[
and you can reject if you want to
No but they should point it out to you straight away
Yes you can reject
Question Author
Ah...ok
I'll end up saying "Oh, that's just fine!"...as I groan inside.
Lol I used to do that, don’t reject and get your refund
4 times we had refund,
Quality was a disgrace and Tesco was told in no uncertain terms
Drivers are never bothered if you reject and sometimes you actually get a better deal too.

I've been ordering from Sainsbury's up until now. They give advance notice.
We've never had advance notice from our Sainsbury's (Calcot, Reading).
I imagine it depends on the system they use, an item could become unavailable 5 minutes before the picker gets to it, so very late to notify you and too late to choose another item.
or me BHG but you do get notice from Morrison's and Ocado.
We've only ever had one order from Iceland and they gave us advance notice. One Click-and Collect from Tesco with no advance warning. It clearly depends on the particular store rather than company policy.
Question Author
I've had an email from Sainsbury's.
Tesco and Sainsbury's both take the payment before the delivery,so if you reject anything it takes 4or5 days to get your money back. Ocado don't take the payment until it has been delivered,so you don't get charged for any substitutions you might not want.
Ocado and Waitrose are part of the same group I think, expensive IMO but always good quality. You get what you pay for I guess.
With Tesco's you can modify your order by choosing 'No substitutions' on any particular items. I've had the refunds on unavailable items before I got charged for the main shop! I found Sainsburys a bit hap-hazard, sometimes getting refunds or vouchers towards the next shop
Pasta if there is something you particularly like there is provision with all supermarkets to say no substitutions.
I've started shopping with Tesco for the first time and found them pretty good - particularly the quality if the fresh stuff. But as someone has said you don't get advance warning about substitutions.
Waitrose and Iceland are much better in that respect.
Never been able to access a Sainsburys slot yet !
The substitutions are usually sensible and is better than being without.
Question Author
Rosie, I found that Sainsbury's slots become available about 2 days before the day you want. For Monday, look late Friday
/early Saturday.
Sainsbury's have given me coupons when the substitutes were more expensive than the requested item.
