I Decided To Put My Trainers In The Washing Machine.

Big mistake. They looked a bit grubby so my Nike trainers went in to the machine. A pair went in and ten pieces came out. They cost me £70 about 2 months ago. I know I don't have redress against Nike as I know what they will say if I complain. Any know of trainers that are washing machine proof?

I made this mistake many years ago, but only once. All trainers should have no problems with a machine wash.

Did you have it on too high a temperature perhaps ? My mistake was using a Washer-Dryer, and the dry cycle was too hot. Most machines have a "outdoor clothes" cycle, which is not so vigorous.

I can't see that it can be caused by anything other than too high a temperature.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, Jeza. As someone who worked on the Footwear Department of a Sports Shop, I would have emphatically told you not to wash them in the machine...

I must admit it would never cross my mind to put trainers in the washing machine! Crocs, yes.....

Put them in an old pillow case at a temp that won't melt any adhesives and you 'should' be allright.

30º Mike. I have washed trainers this way for years with no problems, until I put the Nike ones in.

I have an Indesit washing machine with a program for trainers, husband puts all his running shoes in some cost well over the £100 mark, all come out perfectly.

You'll be hard pressed to find any shoes that are suitable for the washing machine, with the exception of Crocs.

I've successfully put my TOMS through the machine but I don't think they recommend it.

Why wear trainers? Can't you get other comfortable footwear that is easy to keep clean?

I've put New Balance trainers in the washer a few times without any issues, on the trainer setting that is, not sure what temperature that washes at though.

Another tip from the domestic 'god' - buy HiTec, just as good, half the price.

Funnily enough I've washed my Mammot ones today and they look like new. Not sure what it's done to the gore text lining tho.

I've always washed trainers with no problems whatsoever.

I have always washed trainers in the machine and never had a problem, I even used to wash my son's football boots the same way. They were always on a 30 or 40 degree temp and with a full load of towels or bedding to stop the machine drum taking too much of a bashing.

maybe nike's crap, i've put adidas in a pillow case several times before washing in w.machine without any probs

They were bought in a sports shop methyl on the local high street.

I think I have a different mindset to the majority. Trainers is the word I use to generically cover running and walking shoes.

Both types of shoe have an important function and have been selected by me to suit my foot, gait and running/walking style. When I've spent £100 on a pair of shoes fit for purpose I wouldn't put them and the insoles through my washing machine. Having pristine white running shoes is not my priority, comfort is.

For day to day wear I would go to the likes of Shoon where they have a fabulous selection of shoes to cover a range of terrains.

I'm surprised. I often put all ours through on 40. Including Nike. Just don't tumble dry them;-)

Have you got a sports direct, I wouldn't dream of paying more than £20 for trainers - hey have an online shop too. I have worn trainers constantly for the last 6 years (since our major life style change) and my trainers have died. Have been wearing a pair of unworn DMs and they are so uncomfortable (but v pretty - they are green with fruit on (probably explains why they were only £10 about 20 years ago)).
