When I married Mr O I decided not to take his surname. Our 3 kids were given double barrelled surnames. The eldest now uses his dad's surname only, the middle child stayed double barrelled and the youngest has dropped his dad's surname. In a nutshell, all 3 kids have different surnames.
I've been talking to a pen-pusher in officialdom this morning and when I tried to explain all this there was a long pause before she said "what an odd family"

Tell her to stick to the business side and keep off the rude comments.
That's not odd, Mrs O. I hope you told him to go forth and multiply
Nah mrs o - my family set-up with my kids et moi is very similar. I still have the surname of my ex-husband (though not divorced, we've been separated 5 years). My son & daughter took his surname & made theirs double-barrelled when we were married. The daughter has dropped this and reverted to the name she was christened as - which is different to mine. My son, for some bizarre & probably dubious purpose, has changed his surname to MY maiden name. Yet his child, due in July, will have his christened surname.

Phew....................!!

Oh I did more than that! lol
I wouldn't want Overall as a surname either...
Not odd... At least no more strange than mine... My sisters and I all have the same initals so we have to use our middle names in correspondence in order to know which sister is being dealt with. Was fun when we were all at home and a call came in saying 'Can I speak to Miss * ********'... the answer was always 'which one?'
We actually had a Miss Overall working for us until recently. It was quite funny when it was her turn to do the tea round!!! Actually we all p!ssed ourselves laughing when she asked if anybody wanted soup and 2 said yes please!!!
No, it's not odd, and the official should learn to keep her comments to herself, cheeky b!tch

Welshy - did she offer you a macaroon? rofl
No she bloody well didn't !!
I was booking my son into a art class at the local art centre. They went through the usual stuff, checking if we had booked before, taking my name and address, they then asked for my sons name. I just gave his Christian name and then she paused and said, what's his surname? I laughed and said, "sorry, it's the same as mine, but I bet you cant assume nowadays?" She said that actually there are more kids booked in that don't have the same name as the parent calling than do. So I guess you are not alone!
Not odd at all, i have a different surname (double-barrelled) than my kids , who have their fathers surname, (my ex husband) , my son';s son's suname is double barreled being my son's surname and his mothers surname. Not odd at all lol

Phew - I feel reassured now. Thanks all xx
I bet your great great great grandchildren won't be thanking you when they're trying to put their family tree together though Mrs.O!

AB Ed - I pity my descendants in 100 years. Not only will they have to work out the muddle with the names, but I was quietly subversive with the census form and most of it was made up nonsense. Mr O would have a fit if he knew I had put his religion down as "Druid"
I can only judge your family by the threads you put on AB mrs o

YES.
not really
My surname is different from my parents. My dad gave me his forename as my surname which I found annoying as I was growing up. Little Tiggs on the other hand has a double-barrelled surname. Its Mr Tiggs surname and then my parents surname. He has my surname as a middle name.

Confused?
Mrs O - you've made me laugh - can you imagine your OH's face when men dressed in sheets come for him to join them on Salisbury plain to go frighten sheep in the morning mists or whatever it is they do (and what Stonehene has got to do with them goodness only knows)
