Have you checked with different funeral directors. Some can arrange a payment plan.

very very sorry for your loss :-(( xx
I've just sadly had to arrange the funeral for my husband. I'm sure she can apply for a Bereavement Payment of £2000.00 straightaway. I did and it came through very quickly. I think any Funeral Director would do what ummmm says or at least give you 30 days to pay it.
You have my sincere condolences pastyboy
Hiya, have you tried shopping around for basic funerals? the cost does vary between undertakers
I agree with Chrissa, if she fulfils the conditions for a grant it is nearer to £2,000
Sorry for your loss pastyboy
i hope you get assistance ,
Sorry to hear that, pastboy, but the cost does vary a lot between funeral directors. Our family paid £400 in 1988, and then £770 in 1993, but think costs have risen since then quite a bit. Can anyone here tell me the cheapest cost of one now; may be around the £2,000 mark?

What happens if a tramp is found dead in the street, and has no money and no relatives? Who pays for the cost of the funeral then?
The council do...it's still called a pauper's funeral
Sorry about your loss Pasty.....you don't need an undertaker, just need to book the Crem and make sure the remains of the deceased are there on time. I'm hoping my son in law will put his van into good use for my last journey.
Pastyboy - pls accept my condolenses - funerals don't need to be that expensive
hope you dont mind me asking a question in your post,,,,,,,,,how on earth can funeral directors charge £2000 for a funeral ?
deepest sympathies pastyboy.
Sorry I can't give u any advice. Thinking of u and your family.

It soon adds up, my husbands cost £2,300 in 2008, that did include a double burial plot.
Read somewhere that our small family owned funeral parlours are all being bought up by big American companies and the fees have gone up massively. Doing the same with caravan parks apparently.
thanks mamy, im going to check your list, and get mine as cheap as possible, what a rip off.!
Mamy - I paid £2,500 for my partners funeral in 2008 - driven into a "good" funeral by her daughter and son - they felt guilty, but it was a cremation rather than buying a "plot". But did involve horse drawn carriages and suitable limosines - and doves being released after the ceromony.
I still think of her every day, twas my choice to spend that money - if you don't have the money to spend - it's not important. OP - get the grant and spend it . My will just do the cheapest you can from your inheritance and use the money you have saved wisely - hope there will be some left
meant to say my will says - lol
my brother died 4 weeks ago today,if you get any money for the funeral they told me it was only a loan and had to pay it back,we managed to get the cremation for £1000,the cheapest as he was not insured,my family and myself had to make the money up,the council in london was not going to give us the keys of his flat unless we agreed to pay,if we did'nt pay they said they would sell his effects to make up the money.
Pasty - have a look at this

http://www.direct.gov.../Bereaved/DG_10018660

and see if it's of any help
Sorry for your bereavement pastyboy. There is usually a community funerals booklet listing funeral directors who will conduct a reasonable funeral, but they will not pay for a vicar to attend, and they only allow for one car.
