Hi all, im 36 weeks and my midwife was trying to put me in for some of the classes about labour etc but all the ones in my area are booked with extras so theres no room.
Was wondering if people could just tell me what it is that they tell you in these classes. My first pregnancy and am unsure about everything tbh. Ive packed a bag for me but not sure what to take for baby, and all the websites talk about breathing exercises but not what they are etc

any help would be appreciated x

its nigh on impossible to talk about everything they will go through in an antenatal class.
They will discuss pain relief (from breathing, baths, TENS through to epidurals), when to contact hospital, breast and bottle feeding and how the hospital can help with these.

Breathing exercises are pretty simple. I gave birth to 2 babies with these alone. Breathe in through your nose a deep breath and then slowly out through your mouth. Its helps calm you down and relaxes your body so the pain isnt so bad.

The bounty book and NHS book you got from midwife will have a lot of info about childbirth in it and will help give you an idea of what youd like to put in your birth plan as well. Dont forget to add the little details such as how you will discover what sex baby is (if you dont know yet) and whether you want baby cleaned before a cuddle or given straight to you for skin to skin contact.

Bag wise for baby, take 3 vests, 3 babygros, nappies, cotton wool, a hat, some mittens, a blanket and perhaps a going home outfit. If bottle feeding, take bottles and milk though you may find that the hospital provide a small bottle and teat for first feeds.

You may be discharged from hospital after 6 hours or you may stay a couple of days but people can always go and get extra items if you need them.

what else would you like to know?

did you have the bubs cleans first redcrx?
sorry cleaned
Hey! I didn't get a option to get Mini Boo cleaned when she was born.

She was plopped on my chest, gore and all!
you sure that was a mini Boo? lol
hehe, yes lol- it was her. If it wasn't, it was a very hairy something else.

myselfness- i found his site for you

Incidently, I never went to any pre-natal classes, I'm one of those that despite doing what I might have been told to do, I'd completely ignore it anyway and just do what instinct told me to.
i went to a 3 hour parenting class and again found it better to just go with the flow.

4get, little CRX was roughly wiped with a towel but baby CRX was just brought straight up to my chest whilst her cord was cut. Thats why her hair looked such a funny dark colour, it took days to get the meconium (poo) from her hair lol. They dressed her a few mins later so i didnt snuggle skin to skin. But its great for the first bonding.
Just try and read the basics so that you know what each drug can do and also what the stages of labour are. Its very common when in transition stage to suddenly decide you dont want to giv birth and to try and stop it all so you can go home. and gas and air can make you feel very drunk and silly, it doesnt take the pain away, but you dont really care.
haha yeah Red- I remember trying to heave myself off the bed and when Mr Boo said "where ya going?" I replied, "ive had enough, dont like this, im going home"
my midwife did that. Apparently she pulled her drips out of arm and said she was tired so she'd come back and finish tomorrow. pmsl
Myselfness I have just had my first and I didn't go to any antenatal classes either, also there weren't any hospital tours which is what bothered me because I didn't even know which floor I should have been going to or anything.

As Boo says, your instincts will tell you whats right, and you should be fine.

In my case, I woke at 3am my waters had broken and so I phoned the midwife's 24hour number. The duty midwife then advised to get to the hospital for around 6am unless I began getting pains beforehand, and once you get to the hospital everything is taken care of.

As well as essentials that red mentioned above I would also suggest some snacks and a book or magazine. My labour was long and boring for the most part. also I didn't like disposable pants (felt like Rab C Nesbitt's love child) so I used big cheap pants from Primark.

thanks everyone. the main thing i was worried about was when to go to hospital. if its at night im fine cos my mam will be in the house, but im in on my own from 8 in the morning til 6 at night so not too sure what to do when it starts.

as silly as it sounds im not sure when its classed as started. as like Natalie said her waters broke at 3 but she didnt have to go in til 6.
ask your midwife, but the general rule is usually be at hopsital once your contractions are regular and strong and about 3 mins apart. If you have a long drive to hospital then call the maternity ward when contractions are getting stronger and ask for advice. They may call you in, check you and if not in established labour send you home again.

If you think your contractions have started then try laying down, they will continue in contractions. Call your hubby if and ask him to return home if you need him. Then start timing the contractions, there are websites that help time them if youre not sure.

A warm bath can help relieve pain from contractions, or start with a tens machine. Stay at home as long as you feel you can as labour can be slow and boring in hospital. Keep on the move as much as possible and allow gravity to help the baby move down.
one thing that a lot of women never realise is that the pressure of baby is felt in the bottom area. The midwives will tell you to push from your bum and the pressure you will feel is just like when you really need a poo. Its perfectly normal to feel like you are doing a poo but it isnt that common so dont worry.

If your waters break at home then call the maternity ward, number should be on your notes, and ask for advice.
not sure if its the same where you are but in my area you can go to the antenatal classes at any of the doctors surgeries in the area so ask your midwife if any have spaces, also sometimes the hospital will run their own classes. ours does antenatal with midwife and also ones with phsyiotherapist for breathing and relaxtion exercises, call your hospital to find out.
there is a website with a lot of info. www.babycentre.co.uk. it is best to get clued up on everything, i didnt with my first and wished i had. that way you will be less fearful in labour and will know what you want or dont want. good luck
