How safe is it? I know it's meant to restrict blood flow to you and the baby but can it actually be dangerous & if so in what way?

Last night I woke up on my back and I think I must have been like it for a while because when I turned on my side I actually felt a rush of blood

I find this website really useful, because I'm a bit clueless:

hope you feel well this morning
yes it can be dangerous, as youve said, it restricts blood flow to you and baby.

If you tend to roll onto your back why not try a body pillow or even just put a pillow behind your back to prevent you turning flat onto your back. It also depends on how pregnant you are, early in pregnancy there wont be any weight or pressure as such, but in last trimester the baby can be very heavy.
Funkymouse, i always slept on my back before i fell pregnant and couldn't fall asleep any other way. come about 20 weeks i started sleeping on my side as per the recommendations but like yourself kept finding myself on my back when i woke. I spoke to my midwife and she told me that if i'm using 2 pillows or more that it's ok. it's being FLAT on your back that isn't advised. i now actually sleep with 3-4 pillows and swap between sleeping on my side (which eventually makes parts of my body go numb thru the weight!) and sleeping on my back, but i'm always well propped up. Of course all advise is speculative but this is what i've been told and i've been doing ok so far. only problem with sleeping on my back is that my cat then tries to get on me to sleep and for some reason still hasn't noticed the huge bump!!! xx
