Ours gradually gets more interferance as the batteries start to run out.

describe the interference - hum? buzz? crackle?  whistle/hi frequency RF noise?

things with motors in can cause this, like washing machines etc, possibly fluorescent lighting?

Keep the cables away from mains wiring and extend them fully (i.e. dont bundle them up)

put a ferrite rod on the rf wire, fasten it on with duct tape. Ferrite rods can be bought at radio equipment shop or found in the back of old a.m. radios.
Run it on a mains adaptor.

tomd : using a mains adaptor is not recommended. The transformers and often low-quality rectifiers used in such devices are likely to cause MORE hum and interference.

Plus, I think by law these units have to be battery operated due to the proximity to children - thus removing entirely the even slight risk of electrocution should things go wrong.
