Hi everyone, my 3 month year old daughter is now refusing to take a bottle. In the first few month she was fine taking both bottle and breast bit after a while without the bottle she is now not taking it at all.

I was previously just trying formula but literally 5 minutes ago i tried to bottle feed her with breast milk which i eventually managed to express but she looks at me as though i'm mad then starts crying when i put in in her mouth!

Any advice on how to get her back on the bottle?! Its my birthday in 3 weeks and i wont be able to go out and leave her with Daddy for the night if she's not taking the bottle! Appreciate any help! xxx

Hi Nat

Can you get Daddy to give her the bottle? Apparently babies are really crafty and sometimes wont take bottle from Mummy cos they can smell boobies!

Some other things you could try are: using a different manufacturers teat in case she's gone off the old ones; make sure the flow is the right speed for her age (Spencer is now on Avent 3+ and Avent Variflow 3+); offer her the bottle when she's really hungry.

Do you give her a dream-feed? Maybe try offering the bottle for her dream-feed and she might not notice the difference or she'll be too sleepy to care.

We try to give Spencer a bottle of expressed milk every week so he doesn't forget how to take it.

I hope some of my rambling on helps.

Take care x

Hey pixie! yeah i read about the whole smelling mummy from 20 feet away!!! crikey....

I have tried different teats, tried to get Daddy to feed her.but to no avail!

I might try the dream feed like you mentioned tonight. And my mums going to try and feed her during the day tomorrow when i'm out.

Apparently its best to try and get them on the bottle when they're not too hungry so i'm going to try when she wakes up in a little bit.

This is my first real challenge i've had with her! hate to think what the future will bring lol!
Had a similar issue with my son who would not take a bottle at all although i needed to return to work. Tried everything and spoke to several midwives. Eventually spoke to a midwife who was approaching retirement. She said that most teats you buy feel hard compared to a nipple in a breast fed babies mouth. She suggested buying the really cheap ones that you get in the chemist shops - the browny kind of ones - I used them and he took them straight away. They don't last very long as the rubber starts to crack and break, but it is definitely worth a try.
i had similar issues - my son would not ever have a bottle, no matter what, even with breast milk. i tried every conceivable thing, teats, getting someone else to do it etc and nothing worked. he wouldn't even have water from a bottle! then i struck gold - vile as it may seem, i put a capful of baby juice in the milk followed by a thorough shaking to un curdle it (it looks rank!) and he took it no problem. i gradually reduced the amount of juice over time and although he never really enjoyed bottles, i was able to return to work without a child permanently attached to me! Good Luck

"Baby Juice" what did you use? I'll try anything!!

Annie - i've got some Brown silicone teats on the way in the post!
Had a similar situation with my little girl. Tried everything and in the end she took formula from an Avent magic cup.
For 1 night out,you could also use a cup (eg travel top of a bottle) and get the babysitter to cup feed - baby "laps" from the cup.
