been there, i had to brush when my daughters hair when she had gone to sleep!! luckily she was a heavy sleeper and was'nt disturbed!!

otherwise try making it a game as in she does yours, you do hers. Or by hairdrying with one of these girly pink hairdriers...
been there too!
my 9 year old still hates having her hair brushed.
if it is really knotty buy a detangling spray, spray on wet or dry hair and then just brush through!

i agree with hol5, make it a game!
I agree with other 2 answers. Also, try giving her a brush aswell and let her think shes doing it as you help. Sneaky but it worked for me.
Condition it really well and then try distracting her with something she enjoys doing. My 2 year old has very curly hair and it's a nightmare to de-tangle. I let her have her tootthbrush and the tuble of toothpaste when i'm brushing her hair. She gets so absorbed in trying to open the toothpaste cap and then getting it onto the brush tht I can usually get all the knots out. I work through the hair in really small sections and hold each knot near her scalp, and she usually doesn't notice if I'm gentle enough. Good luck!
