The best thing would be to ask your health visitor. He is too young to give him anything yourself. It's not easy being a mum. Good Luck!
ask your health visitor about baby massage...there are certain techniques that are good for constipation (and colic - worked wonders for us). Some areas do baby massage classes. Babies enjoy the skin to skin contact and it's a lovely relaxing time to enjoy together. As I say, it really helped our wee guy's colic.
I shall probably be drummed out of town for suggesting this but here goes;when my daughter(now 33) had that problem ,I used to put about a quarter to half of a teaspoon of soft brown sugar mixed in with the milk and it worked every time.I dare say your health visitor would throw up her hands in horror!! but I leave it with you as being a natural way to sove the problem.
I would definitely say to talk to Health Visitor, my little niece has this problem and the HV told her mum that it is due to the water in their area as a lot of the little uns are experiencing this.
Try him with a bottle of cooled boiled water after a feed or between feeds.
you could try an ounce of prune juice. But you need to talk to your HV re the formular he needs. Maybe he needs a dairy free one?

I have kids with dodgy stomachs and the formulars I've found that work well are Aptamil first and Nutramigen (prescription only) and Wysoy (prescription if dr reckons he needs a dairy free one) It could be that the formulars have caused a little IBS.

Another good thing you could try, esp if it's painfull is some warm sugar water. It is a decongestant for the bowel and also a mild pain reliever....

In fact, bypass the HV, go the dr tomorrow

I'm with spudqueen on this. My little girl was exactly the same. She was fine when I breastfed for the first couple of weeks, then when she went on SMA Gold started pooping every three or four days and it would be quite solid and hurt her. I started giving her an ounce or so of boiled cooled water (no sugar or anything) three times a day, now twice a day, to rehydrate her and am happy (?!) to say she is now pooping every day. (She's now five months old, by the way)

Unfortunately, this is what happens when you swap about with formulas! (I know to my cost)

The worst ones are the 'hungrier baby' milks.

I added an extra ounce of water in with his bottles and this tended to do the trick.

i had this same problem with my 2 children and my health visitor suggested 2 tablespoons of fresh squeezed orange juice in about 6 ounces of cooled boiled water.

I agree about the boiled-cooled water.
It sounds like the little one should have more fluids and water is certainly the best bet. Encouraging the drinking of plain water also helps when you are weening and trying to get them to sleep through.
Our little girl gets like this sometimes and she's still breast fed. Sometimes she'll not go for a few days then be up for a few hours pushing until she has an almight gooey eruption. Not nice to see, but I thought this was normal? I think it's worse when they are that young too. The digestive system is still developing so consistency is very key.
O'Bonio, this is quite normal in exclusvely breast fed babies and every so often they can go 3 or 4 days sometimes between poos. It is because the breast milk is sometimes so pure and full of nutrients, that very little solid waste can be produced.
i agree with le chat, just add extra water to his formula, this worked for my daughter
I had the same problem with my daughter when she was born, I got this from my mother-in-law try Onion tea- take a regular small onion, boil it in a pot of water for about 10 minutes, the less water the stronger the tea, take the onion peels out and add a little sugar or some kind of sweetner. I still use this today when she has bowel problems.
Nestle Goodstart (without soy) I remember as being a good formula for avoidance of bowel issues (at least in the short term).
You can give DILUTED pear or prune juices practically from birth (in reality it's only citric juices that they can't digest before six months).
And - usual answer - if he hasn't done a dooey for over 36 hours, put an infant-size glycerine suppository in him. (No side effects if not overdosed - results in 15 mins or so)
