I noticed in my local tesco last night, that the cigarette kiosk now has their cigarettes hidden behind doors. My local corner shop still has theirs on display. I had heard that there was new legislation coming in about cigarettes been on open display but has it already started or are tesco starting early?

I think Tesco have just started early.
it starts on different dates depending on the size of the shop, large shops already have to hide the ciggies, smaller shops have a couple of years yet.
So apologies... Tesco are early but only by about a month, smaller shops (under 3000 sqft) have until April 2015.
Oh, well that makes perfect sense :/

depending on the size of the shop??? So cigarettes arnt as lethal if bought from a small premises?
This country's gone bonkers.
Thanks for replies guys.
I don't think the country has gone bonkers because smaller retailers are given more time to replace their (expensive) display cabinets.
if they bring in the same kind of rule for public houses. no one will ever get served. excuse bartender, what drinks do you sell. well sir, we have.........................................

ridiculous !!!!!!!
That said, I don't think it's a particularly useful bit of legislation at all. To think that people who already smoke won't buy ciggies just because they can't see them is a bit of a daft idea IMO and people don't start smoking just because they see a pack of fags in a shop and suddenly decide "oooo that's a good idea gotta get me some of them"

I guess it might work on the same ages that peek-a-boo works on, but that's probably not an age that has many smokers anyhow!
well inever know what i smole when i go to buy ciggies, i always stand there staring at the display...

the not having vending machines is costing me a fortune, fatty keeps coming back from the pub having forgotten to get any before the shop shuts and smoke all mine :-(
Poke a couple of match heads into the end of the ciggies, if it doesn't stop him pinching yours at least it will give you a laugh.
Ridiculous law.

They are having to hide something that is perfectly legal.
In my local Tesco they've been closing the shutters about 10pm for years. It's so the kiosk doesn't have to be manned. Perhaps it's just because it was late.
The country may have gone bonkers but compared to someone who'd want to filter 500 different poisons through their lungs I'd say the country is relatively low on the "bonkers" scale!
News just in - KFC and McShite have been told they must sell their artery clogging, fat laden wares, at the end of an assault course to stop the lardsters from being a drain on the NHS.
Oh no, the PC smoking brigade has PIPED up : )

That because the bigger shops are thought better able to afford it and to give the smaller ones time to save up.

Sounds eminently sensible

3 YEARS to save up for a display cabinet?
Shooty - if you are referring to me, I don't smoke.

I just don't understand how hiding something that is perfectly legal will stop people from smoking/stop people from starting smoking.
lol. not you flip flop : )
