My Dad died a couple of weeks ago, went for post mortem, and we have just received an interim certificate. No full certificate will be issued until they are certain of cause of death which for different reasons could be as long as 3-12 months. Can I register the death now, or do i have to wait for the full certificate?

Sorry to hear of your loss. I don't know for sure but I cannot see why the interim certificate cannot be used- after all (and sorry to be blunt) there can be no doubt from it that he has died. I assume the full certificate will just give more info as to the reasons, and I don't think banks, government departments, energy suppliers, etc are interested in the reasons are they?
Very useful information here:

NO IT CAN'T
you can do a remarkable variety of things with it see your previous posts and my answers BUT

I think you have a cert 001A certificate of the fact of death
[ um yes I have been there ]

this can be used for all sorts of things - do once and share see other answers is one
telling the DWP
freezing bank accounts but not getting your hands on the funds unless really really small
arranging the funeral and cremation
getting and dealing with bank statements
in my case persuading creditors of the deceased they wont get a pay out

but you will have to wait in order to register the death
and you do that by finally getting the coroners report and going down to the register office and getting taa daahj the 'final' death certificate from the lady after payment of five quid

for which you only need one copy as you have done just about everything else without it

In my case we had done just about everything on a bankrupt estate with the fact of death cert by 16 weeks and at five months and three weeks I reminded the coroner his report was still outstanding and got the final thing at 6 months to the day which is laid down in current legislation

The issuing registrar ( you get a form another form from the coroner which you take down to the registrar who by this time is expecting you ) said to us " you can now wind up the estate " and I said o we have done that already by 16 weeks and I have to say she looked thunderstruck. and I thought "well I wont tell you how I did then"

I got quite far with:
this certificate tells you X is dead and that law says that once you have been given this information you cannot pay him a pension / cash any cheques he may have signed / pay into his account ....

you can even use the temp one to apply for probate according to one site - I didnt do that

The cause dear Brutus is shipman and the pen pushers down central office are dead scared of missing another - so they hang on and hang on shuffling their papers in case something turns up. It never does

In 'my' case - codeine was found in the dead fella and it was All Very Suspicious and I said - that was because he was prescribed it
and they said: o that is nothing to do with us
and I said yes it is actually - it explains why there is codeine present
o god and blah blah blah - six months later the coroner threw in the sponge

PP and others - thank you all for you responses, although I must say that along with bits and pieces that I have managed to find out, PP's replies made a little more sense.

I have decided therefore, that I wont bother registering Dad's death with an interim certificate. If that is wrong or illegal, I may end up in prison where I will get the time for peace and relaxation after dealing with all the bureaucrats that I have seen/spoken to/will speak to!!!

I hope I can still access The Answer Bank!
this email I had from the conroner's officer makes it pretty clear what happens in a case where the coroner has shown and interest and then doesnt ( show any interest ) - O god I remember - you dont take the certificate the office send it to the registrar !

Dear Mr X

The final post mortem report was received this week and confirmed John died a natural death. The Coroner will be issuing a certificate to the
Registrars to allow you to formally register the death. May I ask you
contact the Registrar’s Office and book and appointment for the end of next week.

Thank you

Mr Y

X Y and John are of course not their real names
