Thing is that they are black...high gloss, as is my headboard.

I plan to sand them, paint them a few times and maby use crackling glaze ive seen on tv?

Will this work because of the gloss?

I may actually upholster the headboard!

distressed looking really only works on traditionally style furniture sand them and use a melamine primer if you are desperate to paint them but have you thought of wallpapering them with a fabric effect wallpaper, did a wardrobe and chest of drawers in a pale ice blue silk effect looked really different...especially after I added some new silver knobs
My friend has used wallpaper on furniture with very striking effect, especially these bold prints.

The fifties and sixties revival papers would be good teamed with plain toning bright bedlinen
my drawers get distressed looking when the elastic starts to go
I have distressed look woodwork at the top of my stairs. If you ask the lad in my avatar maybe he will tell you how long it took him and his sister to make it distressed.
