Anyone Else.?....

Yesterday I had a phone call from an Indian sounding man who wanted me to confirm who I was and went on to say he was representing 'microsoft' and said he was asking me to check my computer as I may have been infected by a new virus........at that point I put the phone down because I thought it was ODD.
Today same thing, it was very noisy sounded like a call centre, this time he told me to sit at computer with windows screensaver (my PC was turned off) and tell him what I saw in bottom left hand corner.......I thought this odd again & put phone down. It rang 3 - 4 times afterwards but I left it.
What I want to know has anyone else had these phone calls, where they know your name?
Who are these people & what do they want & to be soo persistant.

I've had 'Microsoft and Windows for 10 years yet never had a call like that before.
My daughter seems to think it was a scam - what do you think?

Sounds odd to me. I think you are doing the right thing in putting down your receiver. It might be a scam of some sort, there are so many about now - it is better to be sure than sorry.

It's a scam...........they first tried this with me a couple of years ago. and apparently they're currently making the rounds again.....tell them to feck off.

Yes, I've had a couple. Had one a few days ago, chap told me I'd downloaded something that had infected my computer.

I told him that if I had a problem I would contact an engineer. He put the phone down on me.

Actually you shouldn't tell them to f*** off as it's in contravention of the 1984 Telecomms Act.

Phew!! thanks for all your answers of reassurance,
I just want to know how they got my name (I'm not in the book) I'm told too these people put a background tape on so it sounds as if they're calling from a work place but really they're sitting in their own front room. They try to get as much knowledge from you as poss so THEY can break into your system and fleece you.

Improper use of public telecommunication system is a criminal offence and liable on summary conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or a fine not exceeding £5000 or both.

I that ruling applies to you Naz, then why not to the scammers. Surely they are misusing the public telecommunications service, even more.
