Listening to local radio and the female presenter is talking about UNESCO. When she opened the topic, she pronounced it as Un-esco as opposed to Yew-nesco.

Reminded me of the time when a tv presenter was giving the sports report on a Chelsea win back in the day when Willian was playing for them. He had scored the winner and she actually pronounced his name Will-i-an. Obviously a fan of Will-i-am.

What have you heard mispronounced by someone who ought to know better.

I heard someone on the TV mentioning the Hebrides but it was pronounced as, "He brides".

One of the presenters on Homes Under the Hammer always seems to say shire with a long *i* rather than *shur* or *sheer*. Grates on me.

Try going to Shrewsbury. They can tell a lot about you by whether you say Shrewsbury, Shrosebury or Shoosby.

pasta Shire rhymes with wire when it's on its own it's sheer when it's attached. eg Yorkshire is yorksheer.

As a racing fan, commentators are always a tad confused when it comes to pronouncing Southwell. Some pronounce it exactly as it reads, others say Suthell. Couple of years back, reporters were sent to Southwell to ask (aks) the locals. Yep, you've guessed it - some say Southwell, others say Suthell. Go figure as those who utter 'nucular

Years ago someone told us of an airman who wanted a posting to the Hebrides but was disappointed to be posted to, what the airman called it, 'the He-brides'. He'd apparently heard of the Hebrides but never seen it written down.
