The company inputs your card number, then the credit machine gives the company 2 options: customer present or customer not present. If customer is present, the machine issues a receipt for the customer to sign. If they are not, the machine issues a receipt just stating what the transaction was. The company then keeps a copy, and you can usually request to have the other copy sent to you. CNP is only usually used for phone transactions. The transaction itself takes place through the phonelines and machine - the signature has nothing to do with it. It merely gives the clerk an opportunity to notice if the signature is vastly different to that on the card.
