which institutions on the high street are old fashioned building societies  you know, the ones run for the benefit of the people with the accounts and not for shareholders!! I wish to get a mortgage and think that these will be a much better bet and will look after me better than a bank or commercial money lender will

Britannia Building Society definately is an old fashioned type.  Probably are others but this is local to me so the only one I know of.

Are you looking for the best deal for yourself or are you making a political statement?
Personally, I'd go to one of those little Mortgage Advice Bureau type places who don't charge you but instead receive a finders fee from whichever lender you go to.
The Nationwide, Derbyshire & Portman + lots of smaller locals ones. You are correct in assuming they are likely to serve you better, especially those paranoid about take over! The Nationwide is often hard to beat, their are loads of morgage deal comparision sites on the net, so find the best ones and then talk to a few.
