Albaqwerty, since when have we British ever elected our Prime Ministers? We choose a party of government and its leader is, by definition, the PM. John Major became Tory PM in November 1990 when they threw Thatcher out of the window and there was no General Election until April 1992. A year and a half of an "unelected" Tory Prime Minister, yet I truly cannot recall anyone of the Conservative persuasion whining about THAT! It's an utter nonsense which probably started life as a Sun or Daily Mail mantra...you really ought to give it up.
I somehow suspect, Ludwig, that that was NOT what he/she was referring to, given that nobody ELSE has ever intended the word to be thus interpreted! In any case, if no one opposes you, you ARE effectively "elected", surely. However, I'm perfectly happy to say he was "chosen by acclamation"!

As I said earlier, Ludwig, nobody in modern times in Britain has been made Prime Minister by the electorate. Accordingly, the first part of your general knowledge question is an irrelevance. The second part is no more than an anomaly of vocabulary, given that 'elected' simply means 'chosen' as well as 'chosen by vote' . The phrase "God's chosen people" does not mean that God had to go into a polling-booth to come to a decision! If Brown wasn't 'chosen' after Blair's departure, who was?

QM - No need to get touchy just because your man's so useless. We both agree that he wasn't elected by the electorate (a technicality which you were keen to highlight) , and we both agree that he wasn't elected by his party (a technicality that you wanted to ignore, on the grounds that it was just a technicality).

Ludwig, I came by my AnswerBank user-name by virtue of having been for many years the quiz-master at a whole variety of different pubs in my locality and - by post - beyond. As a result, acquaintances in my own local christened me, 'Monsterquizzer'. (That was simply too long for AnswerBank, hence the abbreviation.)
Given that over 90% of pub quizzers are familiar with the silly mantra about an "unelected Prime Minister" - and specifically to whom it refers - I can't see much chance of your question being chosen by any quiz-master worth his salt for a generation or two. And, even then, it will still be an absurdity.
(How is it that my three responses are "getting touchy" whilst your three are presumably sweet reason and light? And we await with bated breath the miraculous plans to be offered by 'your man'. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Couldn't give us a clue, could you?
