I am just in the process of buying a house, and the current owner thinks that there used to be gas connected to the property, although the heating is currently oil fired. How can I find out if there was gas ever connected to this property?

i know its not usual when buying but if it matters a lot to you ask if you can look around for evidence of a meter or supply pipework , say in the garage or under the stairs. the supply for most homes comes from the nearest common access , the road probably and the supply pipe can be seen at some entry point.
i dont know of many people who have changed from natural gas to oil.is it a cost thing?does it seem unusual to you?

It does seem very strange, I can't think why you would change from gas to oil, but the current owner seems sure, but only from heresay I think, not evidence of pipes. Next time I go to measure up I will have a good look for pipework! have been on to British gas, but they seem to have no idea.
