Forgive me but are A-levels the equivelent to gcse's or higher?

A Levels are higher than GCSEs. You do about 9 GCSEs at 16 and about 3 A Levels at 18 b4 going to uni
If you are not British then A levels are the equivalent to International baccalaureate (but you generally study 3/4 subjects as opposed to 6).
GCSE's have replaced the old O'Levels (ordinary level).

A Levels (Advanced level) are usually studied for a further two years after school leaving age (although can be studied by adults at any age).

As others have mentioned, it's usually 3 or 4 studied at a time but I do know very clever kids currently studying 6 !!!
