My family want to lay my mum's ashes in a plant then as the plant grows we all take a cutting of the plant and replant it. Is it ok to mix the ashes with soil then plant the seeds?

as long as there is more soil than ashes this would be fine. x
Sure... but keep in mind (if you haven't already seen the "ashes") that they're not "ash"like at all. They won't disappear into the potting soil and provide nutrients since they are bone remnants. Some of the pieces will be fairly large, perhaps 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch across and will always be visibile, which could be upsetting, I suppose.
Clanad does make a valid point, but when we scattered some of my Dad's ashes from Tower Bridge, they were quite fine - a bit like what you'd find in an ash pan.

It will be upsetting for you sandra, but I'm sure your Mum will always be with you....
That's a nice idea sandrajo,
I've thought about this for myself, with the notion that if the ashes are scattered benieth a favourite tree, there will always be a part of me in the tree as the roots absorb the ashes along with other nutrients.
I,ve been involved with the management of a memorial tree arbor, where the ashes are usually scattered by the relatives sometime after the tree has been planted and i have to say, I've never seen a tree harmed this way. xx

Thanks guys, I wasn't really for it at all until I read your responses, it's quite difficult when it's a decision to be made by all the family.
This is a great thought , and one I would like to happen for me and mine as well , only "fly in the ointment" I can see is what happens if the plant dies??? what would your thoughts be then ??? just a thought thats all .....
