why does the date of the audit report differ from the year end date of a company?

The audit of a company is always completed after the year end and so the report on the audit will be dated when all the work is completed.
the typred date on the audit report ...ie "audit for the year ended....." will be the same but as annie says the auditor signs the report in pen when they finished the audit which will be months after the acs ye
