Would you capitalise the animals in a zoo or expense them?

It depends how much you had to pay for them and how long they were going to live.
I would definitely Capitalise them as ASSETS.

Are we dealing with Tortoises or Hamsters here?

I am leaning towards capitalising them - actually do zoos pay for their animals or do they just swap them about until we get them just above extinction level again?
Well, as they get close to extinction, that's surely increaases the rarity value, so the assets are worth more. A bit like fine wine.
