If I spent say 100 on a piece of hi-fi equipment 25 years ago, how much would I have to spend today to get comparable equipment ? (The hi-fi equipment is just for example purposes, what I really need to know is how much 100 25 years ago would be worth today.)

That is how much 100 in 1981is worth in 2005.

But your example of hi fi equipment is unfortunate. The true cost of electricals has plummeted over the years and is not nearly as expensive in real terms as it was.

Many thanks Ethel.
In 1995 I purchased a Second user PC with 8 megs of ram, less than 1/2 gig hard drive for 700.00 a few days later I had to upgrade to 16 megs ram, cant remember how much that cost me it seemed like a fortune though. 700 now would buy a very nice brand new PC lol
Before I went to Uni in 1993, I worked all summer and purchased my first second hand pc for 500 - it was a 286 processor with a mono monitor. I swapped my Atari 520ST (retail 199) for a CGA monitor (4 colour for those who don't remember)
