Can anyone tell me the tax threshold for a single person these days. I am trying to work out if it might be the same to work part time and pay little or no tax or full time on a low wage but paying tax. Thanks in advance

Sorry that link may need to start at the home page

That link may be no good either here it is

Personal allowance 4 895

Taxable Bands Allowances 2005-06 ()
Starting rate 10% 0 - 2,090
Basic rate 22% 2,090 - 32,400
Higher rate 40% over 32,400

You can earn 94.13 per week without paying tax. Then it is taxed on everything you earn over that amount. Best to earn over about 77 per week so are credited with National Insurance Contributions, though you pay none from your pay packet. You will pay some NI on anything over about 90, yet still credited with contributions if between 77 and 90 odd. This is to help low earners earn their state pension.

the allowance is more if you are over 65

tellboy 's link was fine - just take off the " </p> " that appears at the end of the address.
