A new debit card from an existing bank should not need to be validated, I believe.

thanks jack, that would save the problem of going to local waitrose cashpoint, as last time i got money of of the waitrose machine it swallowed my card.

Wrong, Sparkly. New cards have to be activated. They may have the same 16 digit number but the security number on the back will certainly change.

Em I have a Barclaycard and you get a letter with the new one telling you what to do. Immediately you use your new one, the old one expires.

Emmie, In my experience, which covers quite a few banks in quite a few countries, you will probably have to validate the new card reasonably quickly after receiving it. (This is usually just a simple matter of using the new card to buy something (in a shop, not online) or withdrawing cash at an ATM.)

Don't update the card details anywhere until you've done this, as some companies will check the new details online when you inform them. If they do this before you have validated the new card, they will receive a refusal, which can pose problems all round.

You will normally need to update online accounts where the supplier, e.g. Amazon, charges your debit (or credit) card directly, even if the 16-digit card number hasn't changed. (The magic number on the back (the CVV) will have changed as this depends on the expiry date, amongst other things.) You will not need to update people who hold Direct Debits as these are charged directly to your bank account, not via your card. You can normally see which is which on your bank statement: mine shows DD for Direct Debits & DEB for a debit card payment.

As for which of the two cards to use, it's quite normal for the old card to be refused once the new card is validated, so I cut my old one up once I have validated the new one.

As LB says, your new card will come with full instructions on how to activate it. It will give you an automated telephone number and a web address so you can do it in the comfort of your own home in seconds. This is in addition to you being able to do it at a cash point or by purchase in a shop, where your pin automatically activates the card. Really, nothing could be simpler.

could be, i have had problems before as mentioned with cash machines swallowing my cards. and having to wait for a new one is a right pain.

If a cash machine swallows your card it's usually because it has expired or reported lost/stolen.

I always have to update the websites because even though the numbers don't change the expiry date does :) I just do it as and when I make a purchase from the website - it only takes a few seconds

There is a special number to call to activate new cards which will come with the card itself.
