I am having rather a long senior moment. have been working on a spreadsheet that I have used for years and having completed entering figures into a column I clicked and dragged the figures to the end in order to get a total. No such luck. There was not even a place for the total to appear. There must be a simple ANSWER TO THIS BUT I'm BLOWED IF I CAN FIND IT.I shall be closing down in disgust and logging on tomorrow to see if there is anyone who can help. It's probably something very simple.

What do you mean by "I clicked and dragged the figures to the end in order to get a total"?

In the cell where you'd like your total You need a formula to add up the contents of the cells in question. Something like "=SUM(A1:A25). Is that what you're missing?
If you select a whole column of figures by selecting the top and dragging down to one below the last cell then you should either automatically get the sum or if that option isn't set (not sure it's available in 97) then clicking auto sum should do it without the need to manually enter the formula NJ
Knew about autosum, but didn't know about the "dragging" facility. Cheers Fitzer! Hopefully your answer will help devadiva.

Thank you both for trying to help - the answer was that I had not pressed "num lock". Such a little thing takes so long to correct
