Please could somebody tell me why the number on my certified birth certificate copy is different to the number on the original?

Because each certificate is unique. The facts on it will be identical hough

The registrars use a running number. When my father died we had to get five copies of the death certificate - they had five consecutive- different - numbers.
Copies of birth certificates are often photocopies of the primary document certified as a true copy, this does not mean the person certifying is stating the information within the primary document is correct only that it is a true copy of the primary document. Do remember there are two types of birth certificate long and short.
