Am I alone in thinking that Outlook, which has replaced my Hotmail account, is a step back rather than forwards.

I can see NO redeeming features in it!

I love it! Amongst other things -

The preview pane lets you see an email without opening it - good safety feature.

The deletion dustbin is on each line - very satisfying.

You can send much larger attachments.

Outlook can't have replaced your Hotmail account because Hotmail is an email provider, whereas Outlook is a program (called an 'email client') which lets you access any email service as long as that service supports 'POP3' or 'IMAP'.

You previously accessed your Hotmail account either via a web page (which you can still do) or via a different email client (such as Windows Live Mail). If you've got Outlook, you've now got the 'industry standard' email client (which is used in most offices across the world) but there's nothing to stop you using an alternative email client (such as Thunderbird) if you choose to do so.

My main concern wouldn't be how you access your Hotmail account; it would be the fact that you're using Hotmail at all. It has a nasty habit of suddenly locking people out of their accounts for no apparent reason. There are far better email services!

however can anyone tell me where the 'Report Phising' button has gone please.

Chris, Hotmail has now become Outlook.com. Not to be confused with Outlook express or similar. It truly is awful though. I have given up using my Hotmail account ( after 11 years with no problems,) barely 2 weeks after upgrading to Outlook.

It's hard enough trying to remember the differences between Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail and Windows 8 Mail as it is (yet alone trying to work out whether people referring to 'Picasa' actually mean the program or the Picasa Images website which has now, even more confusingly, been renamed as 'Google+')

Anyway, I still recommend finding a far better email provider:

I would endorse gmx myself. And for myself, I much prefer the new style "outlook" over the old hotmail webmail, although to be fair I almost always use an email aggregator to go fetch all my mail from all my different email accounts and read them all from the gmx interface.

Thank you Buenchico for your very comprehensive reply.

You are more obviously more computer aware than I am, and I appreciate your comments. However, I have got used to hotmail over a number of years and have found it particularly easy to use, and without problems.

What irks me more about the new layout in Outlook is that I can't pop up a comprehensive list of all my contacts, highlight the ones I want to send a bulk email to, and press 'send'. Perhaps I just haven't found the button yet, but if you know how I can do this, I would be very grateful to you for a solution.

Of course, the problem with changing email service and address is a) having to let your contacts know, and b) losing all the emails you get that from people not on your contact list, and to whom you don't reply.

Suppose I'll just have to get used ot it :(

I suggest trying GMX anyway.

Simply set up a new account, access it and click on 'Mail Collector', followed by 'Add Account'. You can then enter your Hotmail account details and any mail sent to your old Hotmail address will automatically be forwarded to your new GMX one. (i.e. there's no need to tell all of your contacts your new address. Anything sent to the old one will still reach you anyway).
