Yes. Just go on the HMRC website or on the Martin Lewis Money Saving Expert site.
It's surprising your employer or union haven't mentioned it before though if it meets the criteria
it's about £65 a year and you can submit a back claim for 6 years worth
It's no such thing. Unless you can negotiate a higher amount it is £60 of TAX ALLOWANCE, which for a basic rate taxpayer is £12 in tax saved per annum. Worth having, but not a great moneysaver.
that sounds totally different to the amount the staff where i work were rebated
Must have been a backdated rebate, dotty- I think you can go back up to 3-5 years
Maybe 6 years then
Best solution may be to answer just when one is fairly confident of the underlying facts or basis on which things work, not merely 'what some bloke down the pub told me'. Some others do it all the time.
i do that all the time it's quite good because usually if i'm wrong you'll pop up like the ed and tell me off and i love the masculinity of it all
By expressing opinions which you present as facts, Dotty, people can get duff info, which degrades the usefulness of the whole site. The only website where that's useful is on Guessbank - perhaps you should join up, or stick in Chatterbank perhaps.
i've asked 2 of my work colleagues via facebook what it was they claimed and they have claimed a back dated allowance apparently. they cannot tell how much it is as it was paid through a rebate on their monthly pay slip. however, before the rebate they rang the tax office and were told they can claim 6 years of allowance. i don't agree with you that i should not answer, i always answer if i feel fairly confident,
The confident answer is that is you are basic rate tax payer and wear a uniform you launder yourself you can claim against £60 tax per year backdated 6 years.
This works out at £12 per year (20% of £60)
If you are a higher rate tax you get - £24 per year (40% of £60)
If you are in certain occupations you can claim more.

If your employer launders your uniform or gives you the correct amount of dry cleaning tokens you can claim nothing.
All explained in my earlier link.

I used to get cleaning tokens for my uniform then the company issued washable gear stopped the tokens and said tough luck. We made enquiries re tax and were informed that a personal allowance was already made, things may be different now.
My uniform dry cleaning allowance is incorporated in my tax code. I found out that my tax code was different to my colleagues` and after discussion, I found out my code was incorrect. This was quite a few years ago but I spoke to the Tax Office, they sent me a self-assessment form, updated my code and refunded me something like £50 or £60 which was about 5 years` worth. There are no receipts or anything else involved, just an allowance in my tax code. Maybe it`s this system hammerman is referring to.

methyl, you are complicating a very simple process. You don't need VAT receipts.
It is a standard fixed amount - £60 a year for most employees, more for specific employees.

The claimant simply gets £60 added to his tax code and a refund of up to 6 years.

You really don't, methyl, for claiming laundry expenses. And not everybody works for the local authority,

My previous link explains how very simple it is.
