Evening all. I have a 1.25kg parcel to post Down Under and all I can find is ridiculous quotes for nearly £100.
Can anyone recommend a cheap way to send it please?

sorry to seem dim but did the post office quote that?
Question Author
Sorry, I have checked out so many I cant remember who quoted what. One site seemed cheap until it worked out the "volumetric weight" (whatever that is) to be nearly 4kg.
I am losing the will to live
We post to Australia via Post office and it is expensive but that seems an awful lot. The last time we had a package that was heavy we were advised to split it down into smaller parcels and it was much less.
Sorry I have no specifics
Here's a website that might help with the Volumetric weight mrs_o

It depends on the value of the item too.

I've just rechecked and Royal Mail are quoting £51.80.
I cant break the parcel down - it contains one item
I post to NZ and always ensure the parcels are split down 1kg is where you start to incur heavy costs
Question Author
wolf, the item is worth £10
Well then you are a bit stuffed mrs. You'll have to pay up and smile
Oh Dear...Can't they get it over in Oz?
not sure but it used to be cheaper to send parcels by sea, though takes a long time, i have no idea of the post office still does that or everything goes airmail. Perhaps find out if anyone is heading that way on holiday, or to see relatives and ask them to take it.

It is an antique bowl I sold on Ebay
Question Author
Hmm, that's a thought - I'll look at surface mail
How much postage did you charge the buyer?
An antique bowl?

Do you expect it to survive the journey?
Question Author
wolf, it was only after the auction ended I realised the buyer was in Oz. I haven't quoted her a price yet - thats what I'm in the process of trying to do
that's what i was thinking, the post office bods are not noted for their gentle touch.
Quote the £100.

They will back out.

Put it back on auction, or take it to a local antique auctioneer to see if they think they can do better.
Question Author
Trust me, it will survive. The EU's secret stockpile of bubblewrap and a very stout box are involved
