If the CSA leave a set amount each week they say you can live on after deducting their takings, would this remain the same if i got a better paid job, if so then it's not worth applying for a better paid position, because they would take the extra rather than me, true/false, anyone know?

That depends, they will deduct enough of your earnings to support your child/children they don't just keep taking it irrespective of what you earn.
Your children may think it's worth it.
I can't imagine you'd lose all of it but this is a complex area. Have you looked on the CSA website?
Maybe Buenchico will look it up later for you

There must come a point though where you are allowed to keep some of any additional earnings. To take an extreme case, i can't imagine a professional footballer earning £10000 a week having to give his family £9900 , leaving him with £100.

i always thought they took a percentage, which means if you got a better paid job, BOTH you and the child would benefit

Thank you all for your answers, will need to consider better paid job very carefully i think.
why consider carefully - if you accept the CSA payment (can be questioned) then it is normally an amount rather than a %
if it's an amount OR a percentage, you will still have more money though!
You are given an amount to pay but also protected earnings. Therefore if your protected earnings + the CSA amount are more than you earn the CSA take less. If in your new job your protected earnings + the CSA amount are less than you earn they get the full amount and you get the rest.

I did not get the better paid job, will stay put and see how things go, the CSA are "allowing" me £145.96 to live on from my wages!
A member of my family is going through a separation process at the moment, and her husband has been told that it is 20% of his wages which will need to be paid for his 2 children, aged 11 and 14.
They cap the earnings i think at 2000 a month and then the ex partner has to apply for maintenance top-up through the court to claim any extra cash
There is a maximum they cap it at and its 2 or 3k....after this the parent who claiming csa has to apply for maintenance top up ...this can be done in court.
If you got a pay increase and did not tell anyone they would have to be asked to review it if deductions from earnings your employer would notify them. So just dont let it be known if you get one
