Exactly dzug. I work in a Post Office and we have recently had notification that the old style £50 notes are being withdrawn. Maybe your friend has some old style £50 notes? If so if she takes them in to her local Post Office or her bank they should be able to exchange them for her.

Seems unlikely. What would they be replaced with?
I'm sure it will happen eventually.

Are you maybe thinking of cheques?
Have I seen somewhere that we are to have 'plastic' notes sometime in the near future? Is that what you mean, sibs?
Do you mean paper notes are to be replaced by those plastic notes, Psybbo?
Snap, factor.

No, a friend has just been warned in the post office that they are to be phased out and she should get rid of them asap. I must admit I laughed but OH says they are introducing plastic notes, which I find hard to believe after those awful Northern Bank fivers

I was saying no to Jaffa i.e. cheques

Thank you all and Bookbinder for that link
A bit irresponsible to tell her to get rid of them ASAP - what should she replace them with? Did they say.

I realise I should have put paper notes in the question
Maybe that woman in the post office was taking it home and hiding it under her bed. Not a good idea, it would be safer in the bank.
This sounds like another 'urban myth'.
Bring on the plastic notes!

I am fed up with manky fivers that have been stuffed in jeans pockets and look like dirty hankies.

I experiencede plastic notes in Aus many years ago and thought they were excellent.

No Mamya, I found it really odd, but it has upset and frightened my friend.

Chewn, a lot of elderly people keep cash at home, unwise I agree but I think a post office worker should not be telling people to get rid of notes.
Even when they do introduce plastic bank notes, paper notes will be valid for months if not years after.
Sibs, you are going to have to persuade her to put her money into a bank or Post Office account. Maybe the Post Office teller was trying to get her to open an account.

Thanks Hc, I think I've managed to reassure her
