not sure, but the first anniversary is symbolised by paper, maybe tickets for a concert or the theatre

i was gonna say first anniversary is paper. i got my husband a membership to something then presented him with the certifcate on the day of our anniversary

because the first anniversary is paper, i had a characateur(spellcheck!!) done of my brother and sister-in-law of their wedding day and had it framed for them.

No answer, just a comment:

I think I would have been really freaked out, if anybody (apart from my husband) had given me a present for any anniversary.

I am always surprised that my mother-in-law even remembers the date and usually sends an email.
